The fifth of seven children and second of three sons of John Michael Swartz (Born: 1875, June 17) of Memphis, Canton, Missouri and Mary Prudence Downs (Born: 1878, March 28) of Adams County, Illinois.

Changed name by inventing a previously non-existent middle name, “William” (aka. Bill) when joining the Army Air Corps due to his dislike for his given name, Gaylord. He tells the story that the Army Air Corps required a middle name.

Raised on family farm in Nez Perce, Lewis County, Idaho. World War II caused displacement to West Coast of the United States, settling in Napa Valley and then Long Beach, California. Property speculation in Florida resulted in loss of investment causing him to retire to Arizona. When his and his 3rd wife’s health failed, they moved into Kingman, Arizona nursing home sharing a small shared room.

Successfully manage early onset (adult) diabetes.

Married thrice having two daughters with his first wife and no children with his second and third wives. His first wife died due to complication of child birth. He shared a lifelong bond with his third wife, Ruth Therrell Hoover and the two where seldom apart.
